What is a Trans-Lesbian?

December 6th, 2010 2:30 am MST

I think the term Trans-Lesbian is being misused by many on this site. My intent in writing this is to clarify usage. It is not intended to stir up controversy. I'm mostly interested in improving the way we identify ourselves to each other.

So, regarding the term Trans-Lesbian, I see the major error as CDs, TVs, and TSs calling themselves Trans-Lesbians because they are attracted exclusively to GGs. This is incorrect. The more correct label would be heterosexual, straight or lesbian, depending on one's identity (more about this later.)

I can understand the mistake. MtFs are obviously "Trans" and they like genetic women so that would look like two females together, wouldn't that be "Trans-Lesbian"? Although it seems logical, it isn't and here's why--the "Trans" in "Trans-Lesbian" refers to the object of your affection, not to you. Since the object of your affection is not Trans (she's a genetic female) you are not a Trans-Lesbian. You're just a lesbian!

Below I've copied the definition for Trans-Lesbian from the "About Me" section of the personal profile setup page on the URNA site:

trans-lesbian adj. Refers to a Crossdresser, Transvestite or Transexual (CD, TV or TS) who is attracted to other Crossdressers, Transvestites or Transexuals.

So, if you are a MtF CD, TV, TS and you are attracted exclusively to GGs you are NOT a Trans-Lesbian by the stated definition above because you are not attracted to other CDs, TVs or TSs. Again, the "Trans" in "Trans-Lesbian" refers to Transgendered status of the girl you desire--not to your own transgender status. Trans-Lesbian means you are attracted to Trans-girls. It doesn't refer to you being trans yourself but to the Trans object of your desire.

So, what do you call yourself if you are Trans yourself and you like GGs? Are you straight? Are you a lesbian? I say "YES"! For example,

I suggest:

If you are MtF CD, TV, TS and you identify as a full-time female and are attracted to GGs exclusively then you could refer to yourself as a Lesbian.

If you are a MtF CD, TV and you are part-time and/or don't identify as female and you like GGs exclusively you could call yourself Heterosexual or Straight.

I hope this serves to clarify rather than to confuse the issue.

Thanks for reading and please let me know if I've missed something.

Be happy,

Andie

Thinking about attending Island Girls group next month and/or perhaps the T-Party in Columbus. Just feeling more social lately. Anybody else thinking of getting out during the holidays?

Attended our local TG support tonight. Was fun. Two of our members went on a TG friendly cruise a few weeks ago and showed photos of the trip. Shared a nice meal. I got to dress up a bit wore my dress pumps and fancy tights with my skirt. Always good to see the sisters!
