Beauty Is...
May 28th, 2008 8:57 am MDT
Beauty can be many things in this world, and many people can be bautiful in many different ways. It possible to hear from every corner that "this" is beautiful or "that" is beautiful but the correct answer is that it's ALL beautiful. There is no one answer to what is beautiful because it's a subjective emotional response. What is beautiful for each of us is different. This is a truth that I fight to have others accept. It's acceptable for a woman to express her beauty in various ways in Western society in which is is not for men, which is a shame. Men who dare wear make-up, wear frilly clothing, etc are labeled as deviants; perverts, even, and that is just wrong. What harm can possibly be done by allowing people to express themselves in such a way? Why is it so threatening to have men express themselves this way? That's easy: intolerance. I believe that intolerance breeds the hateful and insecure society that we live in today. People, due to many reasons, close themselves off from being able to understand and accept people from what they are. I'm proud to say that I broke away from that thinking and accept people for what they are. This isn't to say that I don't battle the beauty beast on a daily basis myself, because I do. I'm a large woman - so far outside of what fashion and beauty magazines tell me is beautiful that I find their drivel simply hilarious. But I don't let that stop me from being who I am and that includes dressing the way I want to dress. Sure, I can't just throw on any old thing and look great, but I can wear pretty things and I will. I'll be damned if I let conventions invented by ignorant and predjudiced people shame me into following their rules. So with that, I leave all of you with this message: Stay strong and continue to be true to yourself. Much Love,D
