An Impressionable Youth

I was in the 3rd grade. My Spanish teacher was a former runway model. She was totally put together, always dressed to the nines in haute couture. Absolutely gorgeous. What was imprinted in my young brain was this scene: there were only about 6 of us in the class so we each got a lot of personal, 1 on 1 time with her. I remember that we were working on pronouncing the "rr"or erre sound in Spanish. We Anglos have a hard time doing it because there's no equivalent to the sound in the English language. In order to make the correct pronunciation, one has to flutter one's tongue against the upper pallete of the mouth. The sound rolls off the tongue. Being able to pronounce it properly, mastering it (or in my case, mistressing) really separates the men from the boys. Or gurlz from the men. Or gurlz from the girls. So, Mrs. X would go around the room and sit directly across from each of us, one at a time and make sure we were making the right moves with our tongues. (are you there yet? LOL) Mrs. X would draw her chair very close to me. Knees to knees. Face to face, cara a cara, vis a vis. I was wearing short pants and I would brush my shins against her stockinged, very long legs. My entire field of vision was filled with the sight of red lipstick, dangle earrings, false eyelashes, bangle bracelets, bright red fingernails, pearl necklaces. I was drugged by her perfume. And, as we practiced making the erre sound, she would slowly, purposefully lick her lips with her tongue and demonstrate in slow motion how to position my tongue and follow through with my lips. Needless to say, I speak fluent Spanish today. I also wear stockings, red lipstick, dangle earrings, false eyelashes, bangle bracelets, bright red fingernails, and pearl necklaces. Leave it to us gurlz to preserve iconic fashion and style until they come back into style: big hair, garter belts, gloves, corsets, girdles, OTT makeup, etc... In other words, Dita von Teese = Betty Page with better photography and stylist. I was a precocious child and had an obnoxious habit of sliding on my back to look up womens' dresses. What was imbedded in my psyche was this image: open bottom girdles, garters, stockings and high heels. It was the fashion, and women did go shopping or just out of the house dressed to the nines. Gloves, hats, pearls and makeup.I looked today at my wardrobe and realized that the past is prelude to the future. In other words, I wear the same clothes today that were fashionable in the '60's. My dresses, shoes, skirts & tops are de mode and contemporary. But what I wear underneath, ahh what I most enjoy are the synthetic fabrics, the tight binding...In other words, all of the things that get me hot and excited! It is, to me, the arcitecture of pure eroticism. And that style of architecture is coming back into style or has been for a decade. First, the Goth/Punk movement brought back the erotic pleasures of corsets, costume and bondage. Fueled by Madonna & Gaultier, corsetieres are doing business hand over lace. I see Dita and other fetish stars dressed like me! Novo Burlesque!What this group is about is that all of these styles and fashions have been mainstays (corsets not withstanding) of our CD/TV/TG forebears. For us and our predecessors, they never went out of style!
