Ohhh that smell.

October 22nd, 2006 3:24 pm MDT

That smell is freshly cooked pecan brittle and its heavenly to say the least.  We used to make peanut brittle by the truckload, gave it away during the holidays as gifts.....Two things changed that routien; one was it seemed a lot of others had the same idea and very abruptly, all the farmers around the area here quite growing peanuts.  Long gone were the days gleaning the heaping mounds of peanuts when the harvesters got clogged and they cleaned the chutes......Always having the native American spirit deep within, I was taught how important the pecan crop was to many tribes winter survival.  Many followed the rivers and flood basins as the trees matured yet another source of protien.  I wondered if pecans could replace the peanuts in gourmet quality brittle last winter and found that not only could they, they made a far superior product.....I have been scouring the city parks, abandonded fields, native trees along farm to market roads and everywhere else that they may be planted in search of natures gem. To my surprize, I've found better than 50% of the doors I knock on and request to pickup the nuts on a 50/50 share basis, let me have them all.  So far the crop has been very high quality and fair to middlin quanity.....I have dozens and dozens of loyal fans and have been told I should market the brittle as its the best.   At least thats what everyone thats tried it has told me.......Anybody interested in that?  Write me with "BRITTLE" in the subject line and we'll chat.
