Name Change
Kairi Melissa Gorman June 10th, 2007 10:40 am MDTFor the past while I have been attempting to find a name that would fit. It was definetly harder to decided then I originally anticipated. Thankfully, I have come to an interesting conclusion. I have choosen Melissa, which by chance was the same name my mother was decided on for me if I was born female. All I have to do now is get a lawyer to sign off as a commissioner and my name will be altered, and I can continue on the road to becoming a female.
On Another Note, I have started a new job and have been wearing female attire and makeup for the first time, I am still not comfortable with wearing a skirt or dress, that will come in time. Everyone at work is supportive and treat me as if I was still me, although I sometimes get the odd look, but nothing is ever said. Once I have officially changed my name I will setup for surgery once I have met the requirements of 2 years in a female role. I will focus on facial and vocal concerns, followed by breast augmentation if needed, and later on down the road will get SRS.
I have been having difficulties locating a speech therapist. If anyone would kindly provide me with some information, I would be most grateful.

Transgender Success
Kairi Melissa Gorman May 20th, 2007 6:37 am MDTI recently graduated from Police Foundations at St.Clair college at the Top of my Class. My entire class including the teachers knew that I was transgender by my choice of attire. At first there was some snickering and behind the back comments but eventually it died off, and a vast majority accepted me for who I was. I had one teacher who was very compassionate about helping me to feel comfortable and she gave sound advice to me on a regular basis to keep me thinking about my future.
This goes to show that even though you are different from the rest you still can succeed, you just have to look ahead to ensure you keep on the track. As well as there are many people out there that will support you, just keep faith in yourself. Best wishes to everyone in their futures.

Coverage sought for sex changes
TORONTO -- Ontario is discriminating against transsexuals by refusing to pay for their sex changes, a coalition of academics and transsexuals said yesterday as they urged the province to join others whose tax dollars already cover the controversial procedure. Martine Stonehouse, who is in the final stages of her sex-change operation, said such procedures are vital to the mental health of transsexuals. The cost of the surgery is nothing compared to the mental anguish suffered by those who can't afford it, she said. The human rights of transsexuals have been violated ever since the former Conservative government cancelled public coverage of sex-change operations in 1998, said Stonehouse.

SRS OHIP Coverage in Ontario
Kairi Melissa Gorman December 12th, 2006 9:14 am MSTDon't quote me, but my teacher who used to be a former police officer, and who knows about my gender identity issues, has informed me that the Ontario Human Rights Commission has held a tribunal against the Ontario Government. The outcome for that tribunal appears to be that Ontario must now fund all Operations for sex change, cover the expenses of leaving the country to attain an operation, as it was prior to the cuts in 1998, as the cuts were found to be discriminatory. I checked this out for myself at http://www.hrto.ca/english/decisions/2006/2006HRTO32.doc and confirmed the above mentioned.

Hard Drive Crash
Kairi Melissa Gorman November 22nd, 2006 9:06 am MSTMy my hard drive burned out a few weeks back and I have been extremly busy with school. Thus, I haven't been on in awhile to chat with all my friends. Unfortunately all my wonderful photos had been lost but thankfully I copied the good ones to my galleries on this site. I was really lucky that my 10 page Health Essay was already printed before the hard drive went down.
I hope to start chatting with all my friends again shortly. I have had 4 major essays, 5 presentations two of which are an hour long on community policing so I haven't had the spare time to go online. So far I have maintained my 4.0 GPA and will be writing my finals in two weeks.
I hope everything is well for all my friends, best wishes....

Katrina's Toronto Gender Assesment
Kairi Melissa Gorman October 16th, 2006 9:09 am MDTMy assesment at CAMH, formerly the Clark institute, in Toronto went fairly well. Unfortunately they will not recommend transtioning at this point due to the fact that I have facial hair and haven't cross lived for one year to meet their prerequisites for hormones. I plan on having electrolosys done as soon as possible probably start within the month.
However, some of the staff mentioned that attaining hormones elsewhere would force their hands to have to send me to an endocrinologist for treatment.
Now the problem is where can I attain hormones and get advice about taking them... I also don't want to start until after I graduate college in April as, I have a phys-ed class and don't want the criticism that may develop from growing breasts. So maybe I could start a little early on a low dose and hope for minimal effects until graduation, I just hope they won't interfere with my physical ability to perform for the mandatory police fitness tests.
I have also decided to change my name legally in April so that I can convert my college diploma into my new name and prepare for University.
At any rate I will be seeing the staff at CAMH for another assesment in 6 months, but will be using their advice as, a second opinion and not formal procedure except for surgery, as I will have to have them sign to state that I am suitable to undergo the procedures.

My Next Step Towards Transitioning
Kairi Melissa Gorman September 6th, 2006 6:26 am MDTI have just recieved my letter from the Camh (Canadian Alliance of Mental Health) and will be attending my first session with the Gender Identity Clinic on October 11, 2006. There I will be analyzed by two psychiatrists, a psychologist, a general physcian, and an endocrinologist. They will help me determine whether or not I am suitable for transitioning.
At this point I definietly want to transition, and am prepared to walk that path. With any luck, I will be approved for transitioning and can change my legal name after graduating from college this year. Then I can start my first year of Cross Living and gradually continue my transition from there.
